We were on the road by 7:15 this morning, and stooped after about 3 hours for fuel and something to eat at a lovely little restaurant, part of a chain called “Perkins”, similar to a Denny’s. Shortly thereafter, we ran into the leading edge of Winter Storm Atlas; we spent half an hour driving slowly down the I-90 in the midst of one of the most impressive and scary thunder/lightning/rainstorms we have ever experienced, The rain was so torrential that the wipers could barely keep up, even at high speed, and the water was pooling at the edge of the road. After we passed through it, we had a pretty good run, then ran into more rain. As I think I noted yesterday, we had planned to make it to Rapid City South Dakota today, but the weather forecast is for high winds, freezing temperatures and snow accumulating up to 2 feet in the area we were heading for. We stopped in Mitchell South Dakota to get tire pressures checked, and suddenly realized that we had put in 7 hours of driving, with 4 still to go, and the prospect of a blizzard ahead of us, so we have stopped at a nice little AmericInn for tonight and possibly tomorrow, as the weather is rapidly turning nasty west of here, We are going to monitor the weather and move on when we can.
We arrived in mid-afternoon here, and spent the afternoon in the pool and hot tub, then read in the lounge area with big comfy chairs. We bought some dinner fixings, and will await developments. Will update tomorrow when we have a better idea of our plans.
