Long Days’ Journey Into…Chemainus(?)

After spending a lovely Boxing Day and evening with our daughter, her husband and our two grandchildren, we left at about 8:30 on Friday morning for what we thought woiuld be about an 8 hour drive to Silverton Oregon, to stay at the Silver Spur RV Resort for a couple of nights. Between an hour wait at the border, and at least another hour lost in bumper to bumper traffic around Seattle and Tacoma, coupled with a stop for fuel and groceries, all of this mostly in pouring rain, we finally pulled into the campground at around 7:30 in the evening. We got everything hooked up, watched a little TV, then went to bed.

We got up around 8:30 and went to finish checking in at the office. Very friendly welcome and a lovely clean campground. It didn’t take long for the Merry Quilter to make her herself at home: (click on a picture for a larger version)

I spent the time reading. We went into Silverton, a lovely little town of about 1900 residents, which, eerily reminiscent of Chemainus on Vancouver Island, was at one time a booming lumber town (Chemainus was a thriving coal port), but had to re-invent itself to survive. Like Chemainus, it has dozens of murals painted by talented local artists:

For our Courtenay friends, this guy sounds like the Silverton Sid Williams!

We attended 5:30 Mass at St. Marks’ Church:

The priest was a bit old-school (Benedictine, we think), but it was a nice service, with music provided by a children’s choir. Returned to the campsite about 7:00 and watched part of a Law and Order marathon. We are pulling out early tomorrow, as we have a 8-9 hour drive to Winters, in northern California, where we will be staying for 3 nights. After that, our drives will be much shorter.

Our Trip December 27-February 7

December 24

Here Comes The Sun (We Hope!)

As Christmas Eve approaches, we are in the last stages of packing up Lucy for a 6 week trip in search of some Vitamin D. Our planned route (see map below) will take us to southern California and Arizona, visiting some places we have been before and some new destinations, including Organ Pipe Cactus National Park and a trip around the Salton Sea. We have also managed to score tickets to the Phoenix Coyotes/Vancouver Canucks game in Glendale on January 16, so we are bringing our Canuck jerseys along! We will spend December 26 at our daughter’s place in Langley, then head south on December 27. Until then, we would like to wish everyone the peace and joy of Christmas.
